Meyrin

The Meyrin site is the only one of CERN’s sites that straddles the border between France and Switzerland. Most of the researchers and technical installations can be found here, along with almost all of the administrative services. Opposite the main site is the Globe of Science and Innovation, which hosts public events and exhibitions.

Do you like retrogaming and retrocomputing? Come and see an exhibition of computers and consoles from the 1980s and 1990s, such as Atari, Commodore, Amstrad, IBM, Sega and Nintendo.

In this workshop, children can learn the basic principles of "unplugged programming" (6- to 8-year-old children) and robotics (9+ years old), be introduced to the components of computers through colouring (any age), find out about the LHC@Home volunteer computing platform (any age), and take a virtual tour of the Data Centre with virtual-reality goggles (any age).

Discover the Middle East's SESAME light-source facility, with which CERN has a strong relationship. More details to come.

Come and see one of the first solar electric cars (from 1984 and still operational) and a Citroen Dyane being charged up by solar power. You will be able to learn how solar electric or thermal panels work.

Witness and admire superconductivity in action in various demonstrations and have a go yourself. The demonstrations include a mini levitating train, a superconducting bicycle, a levitating scooter and many more.

Come and experience collisions of a different kind with members of CERN's very own Table Football club.

Step back in time, retrace CERN's history and discover, with amazing video-mapping technology, how CERN's first accelerator, the Synchrocyclotron, worked between 1957 to 1990.

Marvel at our handling machines, which are necessary to move and install components such as magnets and detectors. You'll be able to operate a 220-tonne crane, lift magnets with forklift trucks and play 'fishing line' games with cranes.

Ultra-high vacuum is ten trillion times less dense than the Earth's atmosphere. Discover the challenges that we have to overcome to create and maintain this low density of matter, a little piece of interstellar space right under your feet.
